Description (ex. RP-63G) |
Print, photographic, indoors, Joseph J. Lucas with right hand on the Mulvihill trophy; trophy is on a table. Signed on front in blue ink: "Best Regards Joseph J. Lucas 12/5/28". Written in pencil on back "17 233-1 [?]". Photo taken circa 1928. Per The American Boy magazine, September 1928 issue, page 17: "The national outdoor champion is Joseph J. Lucas, 34, Chicago, who has built model planes for many years. His winning flight was 264 seconds."; and on page 49 of that same issue, under the heading "National Outdoor, Senior Division:", "Joseph J. Lucas, Chicago, Ill., 264 seconds, Mulvihill (N.A.A.) trophy, $100 cup, $200 cash prize, gold medal." The 1928 Nats was held June 29 to 30 in Detroit, Michigan. Some original material from the 1928 Nats advertises it as the "First National Airplane Model League of America Contests". Currently, this Nats is considered the 6th Nats based on other historical research. The first contest that is considered the Nats by the National Model Aviation Museum is the Mulvihill Model Trophy contest event held during the 1923 international air races in St. Louis. |
